Standardize Position, Colors and Styles

Content Should Be Self-Evident
- Most slides should include a title
- Include only information relevant to that title
Use high Contrast Colors
- White on black is preferred
- Stay away from complementary colors
Avoid Unnecessary Effects Transitions and Animation
- Tend to distract
- Appropriate if used to convey information
- Can be useful if not overused
- May not transition well to recording
Rule of 6’s
- Limit slides to:
- Six words per line
- Six lines per slide
- Prevents clutter and keeps lecture readable
Avoid Long Sentences
- Slides should provide an outline
- Use slide’s text as prompts for elaboration
- Use Appropriate Font Sizes
- Presenting on 40’ screen small fonts may work
- iPod touch screen is 137x smaller
- Small fonts unreadable after video processing
- Use a minimum 24 point font
Fancy Fonts Are Hard To Read
- Stick to plain fonts which will scale better
Limit use of Punctuation
- Complete sentences are generally unnecessary
- Even so punctuation does not aid comprehension
Give Images Space
- Put images on their own slide
- Scale them as large as possible
- Edit them to highlight important details
Use Drawing Tools For Images
- Draw emphasis to part of the presentation
- Point out important features and structures
- Draw focus to regions
- Will be captured by recording
